Timeline with important dates and events
December 16, 1938- Born in Marion, Alabama
February 18, 1965- In Marion he took part in a march that began as peaceful. With no streetlights on white policemen came out of bushes and brutally attacked the protesters. As he fled from the attacks he ran to a nearby cafe. This cafe is where he was shot by a state trooper.
February 26, 1965- After being in a Selma hospital for a week his infectious wounds spread enough to kill him. The trooper who killed him claimed it was self-defense and no trial ever took place.
March 3, 1965- Martin Luther King spoke at his funeral. He said he was "murdered by the brutality of every sheriff who practices lawlessness in the name of law". This led MLK to take part in the Selma March which was planned by Amelia Boynton (click on tab above to learn more about her). His death is what inspired her to take action. August 1965- The Voting Rights Act was passed and African Americans were allowed to vote in Alabama. If it was not for the brave actions of Jimmie MLK may not have participated in the Selma March and proposed the Act.
May 10, 2007- The state trooper that killed him is finally tried and convicted of murder (45 years later).
